The Dictionary of Words that are Impossible to Focus (Diccionario de palabras imposibles de enfocar) is a two piece sculpture featuring a dictionary of words from many languages (Japanese, English, German, Arabic etc) with translations in Spanish framed on microscope slides, and a second sculpture, a handmade microscope with a single word on a slide magnified under a lens. This rudimentary microscope has a single lens which cannot be focused mechanically, requiring the observer to position themselves so that the word comes into focus. There are just under 100 words in the dictionary all selected for their cultural singularity, words like: Gurfa, which in Arabic means the amount of water that can be held in the hands or Komorebi, which is the Japanese word for the light that filters through the leaves of trees. These are words which can be translated at some level (and of course in their physical form can be brought into focus under a microscope) but which seem to require some extra level of cultural awareness, situation and so on to get the true significance and nuance. There is the sense that the translation leaves something about the word still blurred, obscured and ineffable. This piece is emblematic of a recurring Furst_Ori theme concerning the limits of language. The dictionary itself is handmade from steel, glass, and acrylic sheet, with removable panels held in place by magnets so that the words on the slides can be inspected and rearranged at will. Product Safety & Compliance Information
Legal Notice & Artistic Nature
This is an original, handmade work of art, produced in a
limited series and intended for collectors and decorative display purposes
only. In the interest of full transparency and the safety of our collectors, we
provide the following information regarding the correct handling and
preservation of the artwork.
Intended Use & Environment
- Indoor
use only. This sculpture is designed exclusively for indoor decorative
display. Exposure to outdoor conditions — including rain, moisture, frost,
or high humidity — will cause corrosion of the metal components and
degradation of the acrylic elements. - Not
a toy. This is a professional artwork and is not intended for children.
Please keep it out of reach of children and pets at all times.
Material Hazards & Handling
- Metal
components may include intentional sharp edges, points, or delicate
structural details inherent to the artistic design. Handle with care
during unboxing and placement to avoid injury or damage to the piece. - Acrylic
elements should not be subjected to excessive pressure or impact, as they
may crack or detach from the metal frame. - Stability:
Place the sculpture on a flat, stable, and sturdy surface capable of
supporting its weight. Avoid high-traffic areas where it could be
accidentally knocked over.
Maintenance & Care
- Cleaning:
Use only a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Never use alcohol, chemical
solvents, or abrasive products — these will permanently cloud, scratch, or
crack the acrylic surface. - Heat
& light: Keep away from open flames, candles, and direct high-heat
sources. Prolonged exposure to intense heat or direct sunlight may warp or
discolour the acrylic components.
