A More Complex Oedipus

A visceral, large-scale interrogation of ancient myth, modern morality, and the architecture of restraint, "A More Complex Oedipus" is a monumental 1.2-meter lightbox that blurs the line between traditional painting and contemporary sculpture. We consider this piece a "borderline sculpture," serving as an ironic and haunting commentary on the Oedipus complex while reimagining the tragic hero for the modern age. Within a deep, multi-layered architectural void, we have depicted a heavily bound, classical anatomical figure. Captured inside a brutalist concrete niche, the figure represents a modern Oedipus, caught between the gravity of his psychological revelations and the stark geometry of his confinement.

Through this narrative, we wanted to repurpose the classic Greek tragedy as a set of scales to give measurement to the weight of contemporary existence. Integrated into the base is a provocative text to underscore the irony of the piece; it suggests that while Oedipus blinded himself in horror upon discovering his sins, today's transgressions are far greater, requiring an even more honest and extreme payment of accounts. The figure's intricate, structural bindings serve as a visual metaphor for the self-imposed and societal constraints of the modern era, adding a layer of psychological intensity to the raw anatomical study. We distributed the imagery across multiple sequential panes of acrylic, creating a three-dimensional depth where the dramatic figure seems to float within its concrete enclosure.

The physical presence and craftsmanship of this piece reflect one of our most ambitious undertakings. Standing at 120 cm in height by 60 cm in width, we designed this large-format lightbox to fully command a space with both its conceptual weight and physical scale. Every detail of the complex anatomy and the layered linear bindings was meticulously applied by hand in our studio using Indian ink and precise airbrushing. By separating the elements onto distinct layers of high-grade acrylic, we achieve a holographic depth that shifts as you move around it. Unlike our signature steel frames, we chose to encase this specific piece in a custom, hand-painted wood frame painted in a deep, matte black to provide a somber, sophisticated border. We also engineered an integrated internal light system that provides a haunting, atmospheric glow, pulling the viewer into the layers and bringing the integrated text into sharp focus.

Because of the deeply personal and complex nature of this narrative, this lightbox is a unique, one-of-a-kind original intended for those looking for avant-garde statement art that explores the deeper, more complex corners of human psychology. To mark its significance and trace its provenance, a hand-signed certificate of authenticity is included, accompanying this exclusive original artwork into your private collection.

Legal Notice & Artistic Nature

This is an original, handmade work of art, produced in a
limited series and intended for collectors and decorative display purposes
only. In the interest of full transparency and the safety of our collectors, we
provide the following information regarding the correct handling and
preservation of the artwork.

Intended Use & Environment

  • Indoor
use only. This sculpture is designed exclusively for indoor decorative
display. Exposure to outdoor conditions — including rain, moisture, frost,
or high humidity — will cause corrosion of the metal components and
    degradation of the acrylic elements.
  • Not
a toy. This is a professional artwork and is not intended for children.
Please keep it out of reach of children and pets at all times.

Material Hazards & Handling

  • Metal
components may include intentional sharp edges, points, or delicate
structural details inherent to the artistic design. Handle with care
during unboxing and placement to avoid injury or damage to the piece.
  • Acrylic
elements should not be subjected to excessive pressure or impact, as they
may crack or detach from the metal frame.
  • Stability:
Place the sculpture on a flat, stable, and sturdy surface capable of
supporting its weight. Avoid high-traffic areas where it could be
    accidentally knocked over.

Maintenance & Care

  • Cleaning:
Use only a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Never use alcohol, chemical
solvents, or abrasive products — these will permanently cloud, scratch, or
    crack the acrylic surface.
  • Heat
& light: Keep away from open flames, candles, and direct high-heat
sources. Prolonged exposure to intense heat or direct sunlight may warp or
    discolour the acrylic components.
