A forensic interrogation of the soul through the fingerprints of literature’s greatest existential heroes.
"Constructed Identity" is a profound mixed-media lightbox that blurs the boundaries between forensic reality and literary fiction. This piece serves as a "criminal record" of the existential condition, featuring the plaster casts and fingerprints of four iconic protagonists who navigate the thin line between guilt, suspicion, and the absurdity of the self.
First exhibited in 2016 at the acclaimed Signs of Id exhibition aboard the historic lightvessel LV21 on the River Thames, this sculpture is a significant piece of Furst_Ori’s exhibition history. It is a work designed for the thinker, the bibliophile, and the collector of high-concept contemporary art.

The Narrative: The Fingerprints of Fiction
This sculpture assembles a "line-up" of the four great existential heroes of literature, exploring the absurdity of identity through multiple layers of glass:
-
The Existential Line-up: Features the symbolic fingerprints and casts of Raskolnikov (Crime and Punishment), Joseph K (The Trial), Meursault (The Outsider), and Mattias Pascal (The Late Mattias Pascal).
-
Guilt & Suspicion: By treating fictional characters with forensic detail, the work questions the "guilt" we all carry and the struggle to escape the self.
-
The Layered Identity: The composition is distributed across multiple panes of glass, creating a staggering depth that forces the viewer to look through the layers of personality and history.
The Interaction: Reflections of the Self
Designed to be an immersive visual experience, "Constructed Identity" uses light to bridge the gap between the viewer and the subject:
-
LED Illumination: Integrated lighting works with the natural reflections of the multiple glass layers, causing the fingerprints and textures to shift and "haunt" the frame as you move.
-
A Mirror of the Absurd: As you gaze into the lightbox, your own reflection merges with the fingerprints of Raskolnikov and Joseph K, physically involving you in the existential discourse.
-
Exhibition Provenance: Having been showcased in a maritime gallery setting (LV21), the piece carries an aura of history and professional fine-arts practice.
The Craftsmanship
-
Mixed-Media Construction: A masterful combination of plaster casts, forensic-style prints, and light, all housed within a custom-built wood and glass frame supported by a sturdy metal base.
-
Optical Depth: By utilizing glass instead of acrylic for this specific study, the artists achieve a unique clarity and a specific quality of reflection that emphasizes the "cold" reality of a forensic investigation.
-
Handmade Provenance: Entirely designed and assembled by Sergei Furst and Francesca Ori, representing years of research into the intersections of literature and visual art.

Product Safety & Compliance Information
Legal Notice & Artistic Nature
This is an original, handmade work of art, produced in a
limited series and intended for collectors and decorative display purposes
only. In the interest of full transparency and the safety of our collectors, we
provide the following information regarding the correct handling and
preservation of the artwork.
Intended Use & Environment
- Indoor
use only. This sculpture is designed exclusively for indoor decorative
display. Exposure to outdoor conditions — including rain, moisture, frost,
or high humidity — will cause corrosion of the metal components and
degradation of the acrylic elements. - Not
a toy. This is a professional artwork and is not intended for children.
Please keep it out of reach of children and pets at all times.
Material Hazards & Handling
- Metal
components may include intentional sharp edges, points, or delicate
structural details inherent to the artistic design. Handle with care
during unboxing and placement to avoid injury or damage to the piece. - Acrylic
elements should not be subjected to excessive pressure or impact, as they
may crack or detach from the metal frame. - Stability:
Place the sculpture on a flat, stable, and sturdy surface capable of
supporting its weight. Avoid high-traffic areas where it could be
accidentally knocked over.
Maintenance & Care
- Cleaning:
Use only a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Never use alcohol, chemical
solvents, or abrasive products — these will permanently cloud, scratch, or
crack the acrylic surface. - Heat
& light: Keep away from open flames, candles, and direct high-heat
sources. Prolonged exposure to intense heat or direct sunlight may warp or
discolour the acrylic components.
